Fair Stood The Wind for France H E Bates 9780786272181 Books Reviews

it was a fair read, very little flying in the book. Mostly it was the story of the survivors after the aircraft was shot down and their interaction with the local French people.
This is a wonderful, yet rather unknown book. Bates, the author, deserves more attention. Beautifully written, it deserves a place among the very best of WWII fiction.
Only the first few pages were about flying. Story starts with plane crashing. Rest of story about the crew (all survive) attempting to return to England. Not too convincing. Good book to read if you're trying to fall asleep.
The author has excellent command of language, in some parts to much so. The book became so long, the author chose to just stop writing before writing a proper conclusion. Very disappointing.
This book was rather highly rated.
It was a disappointment.
To start with the title had nothing to do with the book.
Then the cover illustration showed a Mosquito, when the plot briefly involved a Wellington.
Then endless descriptions that did little but bog down the action, what there was of it.
A long , dreary, rambling pointless book.
I really enjoyed reading this book. Couldn't put it down. If you are interested in a good war story, read this one. He was a tough guy who went through a lot, and he was a believable character. I'd have to say, this is the best book I've read all year, and I read four or five books a month.
The whole premise of this book was the main attraction for me. However, I was very disappointed. I found the plot and the characters following a predictable, uninspired path. The resolution of the story strained credibility from front to back.
There was a very good story here buried underneath all of the fluff. The sacrifices made by the French people, at great risk to themselves sheltering allied pilots, needed a good storyteller here. Unfortunately for us, the disappointed reader, this author failed to tell that story here with any kind of depth.
