Only Killers and Thieves A Novel Paul Howarth 9780062690968 Books
Between research for my music book and a few business/inspirational books I’ve been reading lately it’s been a while since I dug my teeth into a gripping novel. A few weeks ago I read a compelling review of Paul Howarth’s Only Killers and Thieves so I figured I’d give it a try. Glad I did! This book was not only very well written it was suspenseful as well with some very intriguing characters. I fell in love with Tommy the protagonist and appreciated his struggle to do what’s right, but what of the others around him who seem much more willing and able to do horribly acts of violence and evil? I understood them as well, even if I thought they were wrong. I’ve always thought that’s the sign of good writing. Make the “bad guys” so complex they aren’t one sided and easily dismissed. This book has its share of violence so it’s not for the weak at heart. But if you are up for it, I think you’d enjoy it as much as I did.

Wow! This is one terrific read. While reading it I wondered if this same novel could have been written about our own West. It's an ugly story when you look deep.
Totally different from the typical book I read, but a good read. The terrible underlying racism that existed in Australia is sadly similar to the US history with Native Americans.
A deliberately-paced narrative, allowing the reader to fully sink into the location and time of the story. There is some truely horrific behavior and violence in these pages, and thus may not be a book for the faint-of-heart. Ultimately, a powerful and poignant story, beautifully written very and evocative.
This is really good historical fiction based in Australia. The descriptions of the land add so much to the telling of the story. The story moved quickly, the characters were well developed. Hope to have more from this author.
Very good story, keeps your interest from cover to cover. the simularity between America's west and the Austrailian outback with the aborigines playing the part of the american indian , is very close.
This is a very impressive debut novel. Fine writing, good story. Despite figuring out on my own early on who the bad guys were, the tale is so well told and the journey to identify the bad guys so compelling, I could not put the book down. And then once past the discovery of the bad guys, the dust settles and there is more to the story and main characters that really made the overall reading experience so satisfying.
It is a great book--and I think is the author's first historical novel. It's set in mid 1880's Queensland. The Queensland Native Police are busy "dispersing" i.e. exterminating the native aborigines. The methods used were not all that different from the U.S. Cavalry's "settlement" of the Plains tribes of Indians. The U.S. Indian fighters weren't so much aiming at eliminating the Indian population--but they wanted to force the tribes on to Indian reservations. In doing that Indian fighters slaughtered tribal horse herds (a source of wealth and mobility for the Comanches and the Sioux), destroyed food supplies and reserves etc. The aborigines in Australia didn't have horses, so it was slaughter or slavery.
The characters are well developed; the book is worth reading.
