Told from dual first person points of view (Willa and Jude) RUTHLESS PROTECTOR follows the acrimonious relationship between King Security PI and former police officer Jude Wayland, and waitress/exotic dancer Willa Hartley. Jude Wayland knows something is going on with his new tenant: mysterious strangers, and threats against her life, as well as her most recent venture into the world of exotic dancing find Jude going into protector mode as it pertains to the independent and untrusting Willa Hartley. The sole provider for her eight-year old niece Tilly, Willa becomes desperate enough to take on a position at the local exotic dance club, desperate enough when threats of another nature come knocking at her door. What ensues is the building relationship between Jude and Willa, and the potential fall-out as Willa continues to keep secret the who and why behind to threats to her life, and our heroine’s inability to trust threatens her relationship with the man that she loves.

Willa Hartley’s need for independence, and her inability to trust promote an aura of unfriendly and harsh. Our heroine’s aggressive attitude and unwillingness to ask for help threatens not only her life but the life of her eight-year old niece, and in this, she is a difficult heroine to like and accept. A little bit of TSTL (too stupid to live) syndrome does not make for an enjoyable character. Willa’s character development is questionable until the very end, and someone points out the truth of her actions against the man that she loves. Jude Wayland knows loss, and it is this loss that exaggerates his need to protect Willa and Tilly, an exaggeration that brings with it too many heart breaking memories of the past.

RUTHLESS PROTECTOR has a colorful cast of secondary and supporting characters all of whom interact with our story line couple. From fellow exotic dancers, the local cartel, the men and women who work for the King Security Agency, and the requisite evil with many faces, RUTHLESS PROTECTOR is a character driven story line about family, friendship, betrayal and love. The premise is engaging; the leading characters are broken and charismatic; the romance struggles in the face of our heroine’ s inability to trust or ask for help when it is needed the most.

I’ve never read a Sherilee Gray book I didn’t like....... until now! Someone else reviewed that why did Jude even like her! Willa is very selfish and lame. Perhaps the heroine in this book is the neighbor lady. I don’t know if I will finish this book.. I paid for it and hate to feel I’ve wasted my money... so disappointed. I’m not alone in feeling this way. I saw other reviews expressing their discontent. Sorry, no bueno for me , sadly.

Man the heroine in this book drove me nuts! Really, the guys a PI and you think it’s better to keep the fact. *spoiler* that your sisters drug addled boyfriend is threatening you? Insane. I wanted to smack her, a lot. Her reasoning made no sense.

It was written well and I finished it, but it was irritating.
This book has a lot of potential but, it did not satisfy. Willa the herione was horrible. There is nothing worse than having an unintelligent, nasty female as the h. I kept putting the book down and wondered if I was going to finish it. Jules was the only reason I finished the book. But even though I liked him I couldn't figure out why he liked her. It's too bad that such a strong manly man got wasted on such a pathetic idiot.
Normally I love this author's books, but this just made me mad over and over until I finally gave up at 62%. "Spoiler" The female protagonist, Willa, was a manipulative, selfish B. So selfish that she painted everyone with the same brush and made a big deal out of a stupid promise she made to a drug addict that made no sense because she didn't use an ounce of common sense when keeping the promise. The promise was very farfetched. She made a huge deal out of protecting her niece while every single decision she made out her niece in harm's way. She refused help over and over putting herself and her niece in danger when there were several obvious ways to end it. I can see where she would be distrustful...but still an idiot 2\3's into the book? Come on. I was anticipating the "oh, what the hell... I'll spill my guys and suddenly love and trust him part". I just couldn't do it. So, frustration has me deleting this one from my library without finishing. I absolutely loved Jude, but his character was way too good for the female. I can't get over how utterly stupid she was. Maybe, next book?
Don't let any of the average reviews discourage from reading this book.. Yes Willa a bit annoying - how could see what was right in front of her? - but this book was fantastic. I fell in love right from the beginning. Jude was everything I could want in a hero, he was tough and protective, but at the same time, so loving with Willa and Tilly. He knew all along that Willa was hiding things. He could have found out on his own, but he didn’t. He wanted her to tell him when she was ready. This book had me from the first page to the final page. I could not stop reading. I can't wait to see what Sherilee Gray has planned for us next.
I really liked this book. I can understand some readers’ frustration with Willa, but I saw a woman who had struggled her whole life and felt that the only person she count on was herself. She was aware of her faults and was trying to fix them. I thought she was fierce and determined and interesting.

Jude was amazing, no question. He’s got his own baggage to deal with, and it’s given him even more of a white knight complex than any typical cop would have. The chemistry between Jude and Willa was smoking hot.

I wasn’t interested in the rest of the books in this series, but this one grabbed me. Try the sample and see if you like Willa and Jude as much as I do.
