Out of Circulation Cat in the Stacks Mystery Miranda James Books

As a cat lover, I enjoy reading Miranda James' novels about Charlie Harris in his 35 pound Maine coon cat, Diesel. Set in the fictional Mississippi town of Athena. As in all of the "Cat in the Stacks" mysteries, much of the action takes place in the library where Charlie Harris volunteers. "Out of Circulation," is the fourth book in the series. Central to the plot of "Out of Circulation," is the community's dislike of Vera Cassity, a wealthy, elderly member of "Friends of the Library" who takes great pride in supporting good causes (and being recognized for it). James succeeds in getting readers to despise Vera as much as do most of the book's characters, by portraying the woman as so entirely despicable that we are unable to imagine how anyone could like her.

As in all of these books, complexities of race, class, sexual orientation, and family life provide an interesting backdrop to the main action.
Charlie's two adult children, a young male college student, and a gay college professor all share the large house that Charlie has inherited from his aunt. Each of these residents enjoys spending time with Diesel who has earned the affection of most folks in Athena.

If you are a cat lover, you'll probably enjoy this book.

Out of Circulation Cat in the Stacks Mystery Miranda James Books Reviews

In a tidy little place like Athena, Mississippi nobody makes a sudden move except, in this case, to commit murder. At a fund-raising costume gala Vera Cassity shows up dressed as Scarlett O'Hara and is pushed down a staircase. Did Rhett Butler, aka Morty Cassity, do it? It's possible. They had arrived in the middle of an argument heard by everyone.

Morty had good reason to give Vera a shove but so did a lot of other people. Athena's social structure goes all the way back to its founding. Vera had tried to buy her way in but tangled with those quintessential "steel magnolias," the Ducote sisters. Would those two ladies stoop to murder? Probably not. They have more refined ways of cutting someone down to size.

The local sheriff suspects Azalea Berry, a beloved housekeeper, mainly because she found the body. Azalea's daughter persuades Charlie Harris to help establish Azalea's innocence. Charlie is a courtly gentleman who works part time in the public library archives. He and his constant companion, a 36-pound Maine coon cat named Diesel, are popular figures in Athena, making it easy for Charlie to ask questions about the murder without being pushy.

Charlie hears a startling voice mail message and gets an old photo in the mail, and the mystery deepens. The Ducote family papers are stored in the library archives. When Charlie digs into the archives long hidden secrets come tumbling out.

In a town like Athena some secrets are everyone's business, and the murderer is revealed. Eyewitness identification is the proverbial seeing through a glass darkly but who's going to argue with motive, means, opportunity and a confession?

I love regional mysteries set in small towns. I love the history, the setting, the quirky characters and the local way of talking. I almost fell off my chair laughing when I read this line "I felt my blood pressure start to rise, and if Vera had been anywhere near, I think I would have set aside the manners of a lifetime and slapped the pee wadden out of her."

I haven't heard the expression "pee wadden" in at least 60 years. For me OUT OF CIRCULATION was a true comfort read and I look forward to the next Cat in the Stacks mystery.
I have had a 'love affair' with Diesel the Maine Coon and his person, Charlie for a long time. It has been a while since I got to this gem, and was thrilled that I now have the history of when the eclectic Ducote Sisters(Miss An'gel & Miss Dickce), the town of Athena MS. wealthiest ladies as they are first introduced in Out of Circulation . All of the previous characters(including Helen Louise the delightful baker of all things French and the sweetheart of widower Charlie's life, are along for the ride, knitting an additional old feud between Azalea, Charlie's treasured housekeeper and one of the protagonists(Vera)- think Hyacinth Bouquet who winds up dead. Then there are the Beauchamps siblings to really muck it up as well as the addition of the latest boarder in Charlie's household and former boytoy of Hugh Beauchamp ..Well of course this leads to all kinds of possibilities..There is more to discover and I don't want to spoil anything else other than there are more gems to be unwrapped that include Charlie's grown up kids...more fun for you.
